Learning Through Internships
BAY-Peace offered a holistic youth leadership program that integrated social justice vocational development, artistic expression, socio-political education, community organizing, healing and personal transformation. They used performing arts to focus on oppression and liberation in relation to institutional violence.
In this programs, students learned to:
- understand how theater, imagination and improvisation is useful for Social Justice
- identify instances of structural and institutional violence impacting their personal lives, homes, communities and larger society
- identify a specific issue in their community that they would like to speak out on
- use creative expression as way to address social injustices
- facilitate interactive games and group activities for their peers
- collaborate in planning and hosting a community event that includes public performances and showcases their own art as well as the art of other youth
- design flyers, posters and banners
