In 2016, Pro Arts teaching artists brought art to all K-2 kids at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary by integrating a variety of visual arts into the standard curriculum. The program will continue in 2018.
In total, the program will serve 300 Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School students, between the ages of 4 and 11 years old. Participating students represent traditionally under-served populations and reflect the diverse cultural communities in Oakland. Many students we serve have suffered trauma and are learning how to regulate emotions. Art is often critical for those students to express feelings they have trouble otherwise vocalizing.
