Project Description

Afro-Brazilian Dance: Sankofa

The word Sankofa means “to learn about your past so that you may move forward into the future.” Students at Sankofa learn about history and global connections to move forward into the future in an empowered way.

This program introduced students from grades 2-5 to historical and political lessons through interactive lectures, including videos, recorded music, and instrument demonstrations. All classes learned the origins of various forms of Afro-Brazilian dance and how each is unique to a particular region, and then the students learned the dances themselves. In addition, the percussionist who drummed for the dance classes also taught the students various drumming techniques. The students also worked to create their own instruments from recycled materials.
