Living Jazz: Children’s Project
at La Escuelita Elementary School
The Living Jazz Children’s Project is a free, in-school music residency designed for kindergarten through 3rd graders in Oakland Unified School District. Debuted in 2005, the program teaches music fundamentals, ensemble singing, rhythm and percussion, and utilizes music as a tool for social change and empowerment. The first semester teaches choral music through a social justice lens and the second semester focuses on rhythm by teaching polyrhythms from the African Diaspora within the context of cultural awareness.
