The AOK Board of Directors is thrilled to announce AOK’s 2018 grant recipients!

Living Jazz at Carl B. Munck Elementary: This popular standards-based music program promotes social justice and cultural awareness through group ensemble singing, rhythm components, and performance opportunities.

Oakland Youth Chorus at Oakland SOL Middle School: After-school classes at this new school will teach students to read and write music, sing in 2- and 3-part harmony, and perform for an audience.

School and Community Alliances at Grass Valley Elementary: Luna Dance Institute will provide Inclusion Dance Classes for general and special education students to build a school culture of empathy and creativity.

Circus and Theatre Arts at Piedmont Ave and Laurel Elementary: Prescott Circus Theatre will teach juggling, unicycle, improvisation, and more to build pro-social skills in self-expression.

Storybridge Listening & Speaking at Lincoln Elementary School: Students will learn oral history and storytelling techniques, culminating in a performance with community elders.

*Exploring Culture Through Ceramics at Achieve Academy: Students will explore the history and cultural traditions of Mexico and Central America through a series of hands-on ceramics projects.

*Self as a Super Hero at Hoover Elementary: Through multidisciplinary lessons, ArtEsteem will take students on an art-making journey of self-exploration, resulting in life-size Super Hero portraits. Partnership donor:  

*The Story of Me at Bret Harte Middle School: The Artory will help students develop, produce, and perform a unique collaborative musical based on Janelle Cannon’s classic work, “Stellaluna.”

Pro Arts at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary: This well-established program of artist residencies provides consistent visual arts practice in 14 TK-5th grade classes.

**Sharing Our Stories at Franklin Elementary: The Junior Center for Arts and Sciences will provide a year-long contemporary art residency to help students to explore identity through visual arts.

***Thingamakids! at 5 different Oakland schools: After studying the physics of sound and beginning music theory, kids learn to play instruments they build from recycled and found objects.
