Reel Stories: After School Filmmaking
at Madison Park Academy
Reel Stories opens up the world of filmmaking to female, trans, gender non-conforming, and non-binary students to close the equity gender gap within the media landscape. Students are taught filmmaking skills that include writing, acting, and photography with a focus on storytelling and production skills, all taught by professionals in the film industry with the end goal of creating a short film. Alongside the filmmaking, media literacy workshops teach the participants how media affects them and how they can take control of it, supporting the students’ confidence in their identities. The program culminates in a screening of the students’ films, entrance of their films into national film festivals, and further dissemination of the unique voices of the young artists.
